Shifting during the full moon had never been easy for Sylvia Winters; she never knew the exact moment when it would hit, and so she would seemingly always shift when she was wearing an outfit she liked or when she was in an inconvenient location. She wished that she had the luxury to plan where to be during the full moon (since her calendar did denote full moons) but something always came up to drag her out of the house.
It just so happened that this "emergency" happened in the middle of the woods. The mother of one of the children she tended for had grown ill and the mother had been panicky about the rising fever. Sylvia had advised her to call the hospital if she was worried, but the mother refused to drive the child anywhere, and so Sylvia had to trudge out to make sure that everything was all right. Sure enough, the girl was fine-- She just needed more fluids and a lot more rest. She'd been happy that someone had considered her useful for something up until the point when she'd mentioned to the parent that she'd need a ride, since it was almost dark and she'd bicycled the way over.
"What kind of planning is that?!" the mother demanded. "I can't leave the house now! You should have better foresight next time!"
...and so, after all was said and done, Sylvia shifted in the middle of nowhere, and her bear form had been so hungry that she'd apparently wandered off to try and find food. But apparently things hadn't worked out so well, because when she woke up human in the morning, she was starving and parched and covered in dirt. And the worst part was, she didn't have her bike. What a nice bike it was, too! She'd kill whoever stole it, but only after crying about how insensitive they were for not considering the owner's feelings!
At least some hiker didn't find me, she thought, trying to look on the bright side as she slowly limped through the woods. That would be... Uncomfortable... She wasn't even sure how far she'd traveled over the course of the night. Her bear form was just another part of her, but when it was hungry, Sylvia knew that she was more feral than she'd like to admit. Which meant that she could get a bit carried away with all the beasting and rumbling and stomping around in the woods.
Sylvia was well aware that she was naked as the day she'd been bored, and so she did her best to retrace her badly-remembered steps to make it back to the parent's house so that she could at least get some clothing before going home. She would, of course, have to explain how she ended up naked in the woods in the first place... Well, she had time to think about it. And if all else failed, only a person without a soul would turn away a dirty, nude, unkempt woman... right?
And injured, too, she realized when she felt pain in her shoulder. Cursing, she patted it and drew her hand back to find blood on her fingertips. Memories slowly began to return: she'd begun to climb a tree, but she shifted back to her human form moments before reaching a safe part, and she'd fallen backwards onto something. "Naturally," she sighed. Maybe that was why it hurt to walk. "Why can't that advanced healing ever work faster...?"
Childishly, she began to blame that kid's mother for dragging her out in the first place. Otherwise, she could have safely shifted at home before taking a nap on the floor for a few hours. So far the only upside to the incident was that she was in the middle of the woods and therefore there was no one around to witness her getting the sniffles as she felt more and more alone. If her family still lived in town, she could have just went to them... But she had no one to turn to, and that was enough to bring those dumb tears to her brown eyes again.
Finally, finally, she spotted a house up ahead. Was that the one that she'd went to the night before? She couldn't tell... She hadn't exactly been memorizing the details, since there was a sick kid who needed her help and the color of the roof wasn't exactly of importance to her at the time. Oh, well! She'd just have to assume that it was the same one. Besides, how many damned houses could there be in the middle of nowhere?! Yes, it had to be this one! The porch looked so familiar! And those lights-- She'd definitely looked at those porch lights last night, when waiting to be let in!
Sylvia lifted a fist to knock on the door, but she remembered that there were tears in her eyes and with a sniff she did her best to wipe them away. It looked bad enough that she was naked and covered in dirt and bleeding without her having to cry-- If she did show up with tears in her eyes, the woman would probably get the wrong idea and have her file some sort of unnecessary report.
Only when she raised a fist for the second time did she realize that she had never thought of an excuse. She'd literally be showing up, a mess, on an acquaintance's porch asking for clothes and a bath with no explanation for how it happened. But what else was she supposed to do? Her apartment was in town, after all... Better than embarrassing herself in front of one person instead of the entire town. With a sigh, feeling as though this was somehow in her character, she rapped urgently on the door and called out for some help.
...suddenly, for no reason, she became very aware of her nudity and did her best to cover herself up. The only thing that brought her relief was the reminder that the woman was divorced and lived alone with her daughter. Thank God there wasn't a man there to open up the door to see her there-- What a sort of happening that would be!

It's impossible to know for sure what was going on in Sylvia's mind as she stood outside, apprehensive and fidgeting and waiting for someone to open the door. She was probably thinking of a good excuse as to why she was dirty and injured and naked so early in the morning. She might have thought of a good excuse, one that would surely convince anyone that she was okay and there was nothing to worry about.
At any rate, every facet of that explanation fell out of her head the minute the door opened, and while she was halfway on her way to saying Hi, I'm-- the person on the other side revealed themselves to be not some cranky young mother, but rather, a man. An older man. An older, attractive man. An older, attractive man who wasn't wearing much more than she was.
Those few moments of silence that passed between them were perhaps the most unbearable moments of her entire life. A thousand statements and excuses and apologies ran through her mouth, but none of them came out of the parted lips that resulted from her slacked jaw. If she had been aware of her nudity before, it was all she could think of now. The swell of her breasts that grew the more she tried to repress them, the soft dimples in her thighs when she pressed them together, the hair that fell down across her face and onto her collarbone, the soft, faded scars from the fight she'd had the week before! It was though, at once, he could see all of it, all of her!
Her grip of modesty around her body tightened as a harsh blush spread over her features, not only because of her nakedness but also because of his, and she desperately tried to keep herself from staring. He had such a nice body, masculinity radiating from every inch of his skin, and she forced herself to avoid looking at him entirely. There w-was... A little insect crawling around near the edge of the door frame... Concentrate on that, Sylvia! Don't concentrate on his chest, or his jawline, or that trail of soft hair leading down to-- No, Sylvia! Concentrate!
"I'm s-s-sorry," she finally said after he had already spoken. It was her usual habit to slap a hand over her face when she felt stupid, but she knew that doing so now would mean losing one of the limbs she needed for censorship. So she could only do her best to hide the embarrassment that was etched onto every inch of her face.
Relax, Sylvia tried to command herself. She had a fighting chance against him if he tried to attack her, but that seemed unlikely, and he even seemed as though he was trying to be polite. And so far, he hadn't even asked her about her current state, which was the best thing she could have possibly hoped for. "Could I... Yes, I c-could use one, yes, thank you... But... Could I u-use your bathroom? Just to wash off first?" She twitched involuntarily, and pain radiated from her shoulder. She winced, knowing that the bleeding would only get more obvious, but she didn't want to risk revealing herself by reaching up to touch it. "...and a bandage?"
She could feel her heart thumping painfully in her chest, so hard that she swore it was moving the arm she'd slung across her breasts. (Why were her breasts so seemingly ample now and not when she was trying to impress someone?! Oh, to be flat-chested!) It hardly seemed to matter... He had more than an eyeful to look at it and she felt more naked the more she tried to cover herself up. Her panic was rising as she felt more and more vulnerable. She had no idea who this man was or who lived with him. She had no idea if there was five other men in the back, waiting to jump her as soon as she went in! Or maybe there'd be some psychotic lover at the kitchen table, one that would start throwing knives at the sight of some naked young girl wandering around!
Moving her gaze from her somewhat diligent attention on the insect, she tried to peek past him, hoping that there wasn't going to be some housemate gawking at her from afar. Naturally she felt as though there was some catch to these circumstances, that his tentative hospitality would come at a horrible price. If she were only a beautiful woman, maybe he would help her out of charity, but she was Sylvia Winters and with her luck there was probably some windowless room with a door that locked from the outside waiting for her!
"Is there anyone here with you?" she decided to ask him, hoping that her voice wasn't trembling as much as she was. "I mean... This is... W-Well!" She felt miserable, pathetic. Part of her screamed at her to turn tail and shift and flee, letting him remember her as some lumbering bear for the rest of their lives, but she didn't want to shift when she was already feeling so poorly. But more than anything, she knew how people usually treated her and the last thing she wanted was to be at a stranger's mercy. It seemed as though one thing out of her mouth could immediately make someone loathe her, and like it or not, this man might very well be the only way she could make it back home with clothes on.
...but why did he have to be so good-looking?! It wasn't fair...!

For a harrowing moment, Sylvia was afraid that he'd deny her help and shut the door in her face. Wouldn't she have done the same, if some filthy, naked stranger stood outside her door and asked for hospitality? (...Well... If such a stranger looked like him, maybe she wouldn't!) But she knew that she had no choice but to depend on this man, this stranger who she already felt thoroughly embarrassed by just because of the state she was in as she stood in front of him. Ah, fate! Sylvia had always believe in good karma. So why were things like this happening to her? What had she done wrong...?!
But it seemed as though karma was on her side today, because the man, obviously sent from the heavens to rescue her from such a humiliating situation, merely stammered out an apology and moved to let her pass.
It was such an emotional situation for her that she nearly burst into tears of relief, and she had to remind herself that hugging him in such a stat would be an extremely bad idea. "Oh, thank you!" she burst, stepping inside as if she were stepping through the gates of heaven. "Thank you, thank you so much!" It had been the first time she'd smiled since she'd arrived, and it was a smile of being absolutely overjoyed at the realization that she had brief shelter.
Though she was relieved, Sylvia knew that it would be stupid (that is, like her) to let her guard down just because she was inside his house. It would make much more sense to be more suspicious. After all, she was in his domain! He knew the house's whole layout and she didn't. So something as innocuous as him telling her where the bath was ended up putting her on edge... Would he show her the room to the torture dungeon next? The windowless room?!
Don't be ridiculous, she told herself with a frown. She had thought of him as a sort of savior not sixty seconds beforehand and it was even more stupid to continuously mistrust him. He'd been nothing but polite to her, even gallant, trying to bounce his eyes whenever he could. He'd told her I promise as if they knew each other intimately enough for her to deserve promises! It made her a little relaxed!
"Which room is it?" Sylvia called back when she unsuccessfully located the bathroom. She didn't notice his stares, partly because she really was interested in taking a bath and partly because she was doing her best to get her own worship out of her mind. Oh, why did she have to meet some attractive man in the woods?! He was older than her, not like the baby-faced men she met in her own age group, but he looked the type who was comfortable in the woods, all masculinity and maturity. She could hardly stand just being in his presence, knowing that there was probably a long line of women begging to be in her place. Why couldn't she have met him in some supermarket or movie theater or park?! Oh, no! She just had to look as if she'd grown up in the woods!
To her surprise, he passed her and opened up the door for her, much as a gentleman might do if both of them were fully clothed. Feeling a warmth spreading to her cheeks, only partly from embarrassment, she waddled into the bathroom and peeped around. No, no torture equipment seemed to be lying around. In fact, to her relief, she found that it looked like a regular bathroom: sort of messy, covered in towels and the like.
"I won't be long, I promise," she said, her heart thumping as she closed the door. God, what a world we live in! She couldn't believe they'd met each other just a few minutes before. Sighing and feeling her body mostly relax as a result, she crossed over to the tub and examined it. Usually other people's showers and baths confused her, but, with a stroke of luck, she realized that filling a bath wasn't nearly as hard as trying to work a shower, and she leaned back on her heels, watching the water slowly fill up in the tub.
Sylvia jumped when he announced that he'd brought clothes despite his attempts to do otherwise, and she had to ignore her thumping heart when she yelled back a confirmation. She padded over to the door, waiting until she heard his footsteps retreat before she turned the knob and peeped out, panicked at the thought of him waiting right outside the door, but found that he wasn't around anywhere. Letting out seemingly all her breath at once, she picked up the clothes and went back inside.
As she looked for a place to set them down, she was once more comforted by the look of the bathroom. There were bath toys and towels thrown haphazardly, which told her that children lived here, too. He must be a father! She was surprised she hadn't been able to sense it immediately, but then again, she wasn't in top form quite yet. Either way, how bad could he possibly be if his kid felt comfortable enough to leave the place in a homey mess?
The bath was finally full and she nearly jumped inside, her heart swelling at the sight of something so normal as a full bath. With an ecstatic giggle she slipped into the bath, feeling her stress melt away as the hot water washed over her skin. It felt like heaven! How long had it been since she'd had a real, proper bath? She lifted a leg, washing the morning's dirt and mud and grime off of her skin so that it was smooth and clean as ever.
Sylvia always felt her best when she was clean, no matter the situation, and today was no different. Only when she reminded herself that she was in a stranger's house did she redden and curl up in the tub, feeling self-conscious. There was something strange about bathing in the same place where he had bathed, where he had also placed his naked body, letting out a sigh of relief, leaning his head back against the edge of the tub and exposing that beautiful throat of his... Ah, Sylvia! Get back to the matters at hand...!
His voice disrupted her thinking, thankfully, and she automatically ducked down in the tub so that she was almost entirely submerged, as if she were a kid hiding from a yelling parent. But it looked as though, once more, she had no reason to be nervous... He was just checking up on her, wanting to help and make sure she was all right. This time her entire body felt heated, and not just because of the heat of the tub. What had she done to deserve such a man taking care of her? And a stranger, too! She'd have to repay him in some way. But what could she do, short of--sleeping with him? Well, she could knit him something... A sweater, or twenty sweaters, or a big blanket
"You can come in," she called out bravely. It didn't seem right to set rules within his house, anyway, even if he did it for her sake and privacy. Besides, it was hard to patch up her shoulder when she didn't have a mirror, and she'd appreciate all the help she could get. "Don't worry; I'll turn around!" Of course, Sylvia was still convinced that no man seriously thought about her in a sexual way, so she wasn't sure why she needed to hide herself other than for manners' sake...
Realizing that the bathwater was clear and he'd be able to see everything if he simply looked in, so with a squeal of surprise she immediately went into a defensive position, drawing her knees up to her chest and turning to face the opposite wall. At least she was clean and looked halfway presentable-- Maybe then he wouldn't think she was crazy!
Did an animal attack you? Her heart began to thump once more. Could he really be a werecreature if that was his assumption? A werecreature might have assumed that the whole ordeal was connected to the full moon--right? Or did other werecreatures just not want to take chances in case they were dealing with a human who didn't know any better? Ah, it was so confusing!
"...No, I didn't get attacked," she admitted, feeling heat stinging her cheeks once more as she realized that he was now in the room with her. Tightening her grip on her legs, she stammered, "I... f-f-fell out of a tree, that's all. Um, it's a l-long story..."
...Of course, he was well within his rights to ask just what the story was, but she'd have to think of another excuse!
